Artist Statement
My art explores America. The violent past, the dreaded future, the degradation of material. Harmony with the natural world, how we live within it, how we devour it and how it devours us.
Through photography, drawing, and a collaboration between the two, I bear witness to ignored niches in the world and cement them into image. My photography is an exploration of space; more times than not, the act of going somewhere is the art, and the photo is the evidence of my motion's existence. My in-studio work (drawing, collage, print) is an obsessive practice. By recreating my visions I am touching every line I create and in turn touching the memory. I strive to imbue my images with whatever ghosts I felt in the space I previously inhabited. Because much of my practice draws inspiration from experiences, I have found bookmaking as a fertile form for guiding my viewers through a careful, visual and emotional story.
Much of my subject matter focuses on human construction in and around so-called "nature." I wish to highlight the grey area of both civilization and the wild. I believe there is a way to respect our planet's landscape while regarding its danger and brutality. Likewise, our human constructs can be destructive while simultaneously home.
